Amtrak Cascades



The Amtrak Cascades intercity passenger rail system is a service funded by Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). As a sponsor and good steward of state funds, WSDOT is committed to monitoring and reporting Amtrak Cascades' performance.

The Amtrak Cascades service connects 18 cities along the I-5 corridor, offering:

  • Six daily round trips between Seattle and Portland
  • Two daily round trips between Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia
  • Two daily round trips between Portland and Eugene, Oregon (ODOT-supported segments)

This dashboard provides Amtrak Cascades performance measures including ridership, capacity utilization, annual passenger miles traveled and on-time performance on the WSDOT-supported segments of the Amtrak Cascades, which includes stops from Portland, Oregon to Vancouver, B.C.

Notes: The names of several performance measures in this chart have been shortened for readability. "On-time" is short for "on-time performance," "Utilization" is short for "Train Capacity Utilization" and "PMT" is short for "passenger miles traveled." For details on the methodology used to calculate ridership, train capacity utilization, passenger miles traveled and on-time performance refer to Amtrak Cascades system performance methodology (PDF 5.9MB).



Multi-year trends

Ridership and utilization performance:

  • In 2024, systemwide ridership on WSDOT-supported segments was about 898,000, an increase of 475.6% from 156,000 in 2020, and 19.3% higher than the pre-pandemic level of 753,000 in 2019.
  • The maximum utilization rate for peak sub-segments increased from 29.8% in 2020 to 64.7% in 2024. Utilization rates across all sub-segments grew between 2020 and 2024. However, utilization rates in all sub-segments declined in 2024 compared to 2023. Despite higher ridership, the decrease in utilization rate was due to more seating available with the Horizon trainsets.

Passenger miles traveled & on-time performance:

  • Passenger miles traveled increased by 473.2% from 23.9 million passenger miles in 2020 to 137.0 million passenger miles in 2024, and 14.4% greater than the 119.8 million passenger miles in pre-pandemic year 2019.
  • On-time performance decreased from 62.3% in 2020 to 48.5% in 2024
